The casting in Raimi's films was awful except for the villains.

Like, what was with the ages of Uncle Ben and Aunt May? They were about 20 years too old.

Does 8 years not make sense? This film is 2017, Iron Man was 2008, Iron Man 2/Thor/The Incredible Hulk a year later, then The Avengers a few months after that. Does that not work? Are there other things contradicting this?

So anyway, I really liked this film. It is probably the best Spider-Man film, but I am too scared to rewatch Spider-Man 2 to verify this (scared because it probably holds up terribly).

I really, really liked their version of MJ, it was a great take on a character that Raimi did terribly. Also although the trailers revealed a lot about the film's structure (it is a Sony film, after all) there were some great surprises.

This is the thing - I don't think there are such uses. You would not call bats birds or dolphins fish (people used to!). It is needlessly confusing. Casual use must adapt as science advances, and the only way to do this is education. You're kind of arguing for still calling Pluto a planet.

Just to clarify what I said earlier by the way, Reptilia is the parent class of the Diapsida, shared with the Anapsida which are all extinct.

The whole thing about science is that it moves forward. We have changed the definitions.

When taxonomy started, it was purely morphological. Now it has shifted to evolutionary, because we now have the technology to do this. It was actually a huge rearrangement of the tree of life, really interesting stuff.

However, you have to understand that Reptilia is a clade the same as Diapsida, we don't just call diapsids reptiles. That seems to be your point of confusion.

There isn't a strict logic to the ordering of the names. You start at species and go up. You could definitely redefine reptiles to exclude archosaurs, but there's no real will or reason to do this.

But is there a real will or reason for why it SHOULDN'T be that way?

That's my point. If there's not, then it's just as arbitrary.

Because the term was originally envisioned with them in mind, so why exclude them to exclude a very similar group? You can say it's arbitrary but only in the way all names are arbitrary.

foolm0r0n posted...
Why not just keep calling reptiles "everything under reptilia except birds" which is very simple and uncontroversial?

Because the word reptiles=Reptilia literally, it would be extremely confusing. Just say non-avian reptiles.

I'm struggling with the same stuff Maria brought up

If the point is to find the smallest groups, then why does "reptiles" start ABOVE archosaurs/lepidosaurs? Why can't "reptiles" be lepidosaurs and archosaurs be something else? And how can birds be = reptiles, but crocodiles can't be = birds if they're both under "reptiles?"

There isn't a strict logic to the ordering of the names. You start at species and go up. You could definitely redefine reptiles to exclude archosaurs, but there's no real will or reason to do this. Crocodiles are not birds because they form a separate monophyletic clade. That's really all there is to it.

Think about it this way: pidgeons are birds and penguins are birds but pidgeons are not penguins.

Mammals and reptiles DO form separate clades within one larger clade.

So, then, using the image Maria provided...

Why make the ruling that Diapsids are all reptiles, but Amniotes can be classified as different things? Why can't Archosaurs and Lepidosaurs be classified differently?

I think you're a bit confused here. They ARE classified differently, within the same parent group. Think about it this way: my family is a separate unit to your family, but we are all within the same species.
MariaTaylor posted...
Lightning Strikes posted...
No, this isn't really true. Mammals and reptiles DO form separate clades within one larger clade. Yes, everything is related but that's the entire point - all life comes from one ancestor.

what is your opinion on the synapsids on the tree posted above, then? what are the "mammal-like reptiles"? if they are reptiles then why are mammals not also considered reptiles? and if they are not reptiles then does that mean they are mammals? or something else?

Lightning Strikes posted...
Additionally birds have many, many physiological similarities with reptiles, and any rule you make to exclude them WILL be arbitrary. You will also have some trouble coming up with a rule that excludes only modern birds. It would be like excluding humans from mammals.

just out of curiosity though why would you prefer to say that birds are reptiles and not crocodiles = birds? is there any particular reason to do it this way? or is it just because that's what we are taught to do?

The answer to your two posts is the same. The purpose of classification is to find the smallest possible groups. Generally stopping at species, which is a whole separate issue. This is why we separate crocodiles and birds. What they are called is fairly meaningless, but the division is important. They must be separate for classifications to work and be non-arbitrary. As for mammal-like reptiles, that's easy - the term is out of date. Proto-mammals would be more accurate and is increasingly used.

What Maria is saying is not technically wrong, but I would be hard pressed to find a scientist who believes that morphological classification is relevant unless you're purely comparing physiology. Additionally it's very misleading to say that birds are substantially physiologically different since so are many different groups of reptile. Additionally birds have many, many physiological similarities with reptiles, and any rule you make to exclude them WILL be arbitrary. You will also have some trouble coming up with a rule that excludes only modern birds. It would be like excluding humans from mammals.

Linnaean classification and morphology are used in some fields where it is relevant. However, no taxonomist or anyone concerned with classification would use it. It is not used for classification.

HashtagSEP posted...
My issue with the evolutionary method, and correct me if I'm wrong here since I have only very basic knowledge from a college class or two, is that going by evolution, then mammals are the same as reptiles, as well, and thus where things are classed as the "same" or not just depends on where the cutoff begins.

No, this isn't really true. Mammals and reptiles DO form separate clades within one larger clade. Yes, everything is related but that's the entire point - all life comes from one ancestor.

Think of it this way: you have a nuclear family, an extended family, an extended family once removed, etc. Same basic principle - different units within one whole. Also, all life contains many of the same features, so what you say is true morphologically.

Edit: Simply put, crocodiles aren't flightless birds because birds exclude crocodiles, non-avian dinosaurs are also not flightless birds. They are all archosaurs. Easy.

Also classification is absolutely not arbitrary!

In the context that is being used here, a clade (class, species, whatever) is a monophyleyic group that includes all descendants of a common ancestor. You cannot form such a group that includes all other reptiles but excludes birds. There IS a consensus on this.

I have a degree in Zoology and work in genetics and evolutionary biology, and birds are 100% reptiles. You cannot form a monophyletic clade that includes all reptiles to the exclusion of birds. They belong to the class Reptilia, and thus they are taxonomically reptiles. Taxonomy is no longer morphological, it's evolutionary.

Now, you could have a term for a paraphyletic group (one that cannot exclude all others) like "herpetofauna" (non-avian reptiles and amphibians) but you wouldn't say "reptile" in this context as it would be very confusing to use this term for both the entire class and a group that excludes birds. Just say "non-avian reptiles".

Also not all dinosaurs are birds, but all birds are dinosaurs so there you go.

But it made $200 million overseas, including $125 million in China.

Bear in mind it is still well behind expectations overseas as well, even in China it should end up making $100 million less than the last one. This film could end up with less than $800 million and this used to be a billion dollar franchise. This summer has kind of been the reckoning for bad blockbuster franchises, especially in the US.
